President Lincoln's Funeral Train Ohio Historical Marker

With all the news coverage of Queen Elizabeth II's funeral, it leads us to reflect on our Country’s own history of great figures who have passed away.

Did you know that Champaign County shared in a historical funeral? After his assassination on April 14th 1895, the body of President Abraham Lincoln was placed on a train to make its way back to his hometown of Springfield, Illinois. 

​The train made a stop in Columbus where the body of our President laid in state at the capital. From there it made its way to our very own, Champaign County, making a few stops along the way. Most notably, in Woodstock, where more almost 500 mourners turned out to pay their respects. The train departed, and made a few more stops including St. Paris, before finally arriving in Springfield, Illinois on May 3rd, 1895, nearly three weeks after his death. What an amazing piece of history that we can be proud of.
