March Cereal Madness at WL-S

3/30/2023

Story/Photo submitted by West Liberty-Salem Local Schools

West Liberty-Salem Elementary uses March Madness as inspiration behind their recent community giving event.  Elementary students and their families donated more than 1400 boxes of cereal for a school wide game of dominos called March Cereal Madness.

The more than 1400 boxes of cereal were set up throughout the halls of the entire elementary and successfully fell completely in order and ending with the WL-S grand finale in the gym! Specials teachers planned and designed the route that the dominos would take, while fifth graders were integral in the set-up, tear down, and execution of the falling boxes. After the main event, students helped load volunteers' cars with all 1407 cereal boxes that will stock local food pantries in Champaign and Logan Counties.

Painesville City Local School District, EnvisionEdPlus and Career Town Network are excited to offer the INAUGURAL Youth Virtual Career Fair to connect Ohio graduating high school seniors to jobs, internships and apprenticeship opportunities within Ohio businesses for the entire month of May 2023.

We currently have over 2,000 high school seniors participating in the virtual career fair from 24 counties and the list of students, schools and counties is still growing! The students are READY TO WORK and it is critical that we have outstanding employer participation from across the state!!

Career Town Network knows that it is difficult to find the right employee that has all the skills a business requires. Their virtual career fair platform is designed to connect job seekers with employers, similar to the way an in-person career fair works. Employers populate their virtual booth with as much content as they want, including videos and links to their social media pages. Recruiters and Human Resource staff can video chat with the job seeker & HIRE THEM ON THE SPOT!

Career Town is offering businesses the opportunity to participate in this virtual career fair at a significantly discounted rate of $250 per booth (regularly $950). Businesses should contact Jeannie Mok, Regional Relationship Manager, at [email protected] to learn more about the platform and how they can participate. Please reference EnvisionEdPlus.

School Registration is free and has been extended through April 7th. When schools register, they will identify a School Champion to support their students. The School Champion will work with others in their district to recruit students, support and help them to register for the event. Student participation in the Virtual Career Fair is FREE!

EnvisionEdPlus will provide live virtual training to School Champions to help students create high quality resumes and LinkedIn profiles.

This event is funded in part by Ohio Department of Education's Innovative Workforce Incentive Program grant.

Next year all Champaign County middle school and high school students will have access to YouScience. YouScience is a series of aptitude tests that 8th graders and 10th graders throughout the county will take to help students identify their aptitudes, validate their skills and get matched with educational and career pathways. Once students have completed the aptitude tests it will allow them to explore careers that may fit their interests. Local businesses are now able to add their business information to YouScience for students to explore as well as being added to career cards that provide more direct links. The attached PDF explains how to get your business added for FREE.

If you're interested in really engaging and connecting to talent via the career cards, here is the link for that, but does involve a small fee of $600. This allows businesses to add three job titles and positions through the end of next school year, ending June 30, 2024. The link to learn more is https://www.youscience.com/employers/.

What's in it for you? -- Once students search a given career cluster your business will appear for local students (not just Champaign County) to directly see how your business may be a fit for them.

Leadership project works toward mural installation

3/29/2023

Picture
Participants of "Leadership Champaign County" sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, are completing a project that we feel will benefit Champaign County. The project chosen is to have a mural painted on the west wall of 108 Scioto Street in Urbana. Owners Cody and Amber Smith have generously agreed to host this mural and are excited to be an integral part of this project. The team has been in contact with the Zoning Department for the City of Urbana and will be presenting to Design Review Board on April 24th. "We are confident that the installation of this mural will benefit our community and hope that it paves the way for additional public art throughout the county."

The artist is Urbana native Madison Larocque, and she has been working with the leadership team and the building owners to come up with the perfect mural design. The inspiration is "Be The Light" and comes from the photos above; it will be a place where all can stop to enjoy the artwork, snap a picture, and share with the world. They  are nearing the final design stages and plan to have the mural in place on or before May 1st. They estimate the total cost of this project to be $2,000 and are in need of community members and local businesses to help support this cost, which includes compensation of the artist. Any money raised beyond the $2,000 will go into a newly created Public Art Fund housed at the Champaign Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau for future projects throughout the county. They ask that you consider making a donation to help reach the goals they have and hope that you will be able to make a contribution. Your generosity will make a difference in our community by allowing them to continue in their work. Remember that every donation and gift makes a difference, regardless of size.
