Right Picture - The team of Paige Martinez and Gavin Spence pose after unloading donations at the Caring Kitchen Submitted Story By Thomas Russell, DECA Advisor - Urbana High School On September 20, the Urbana High School DECA Chapter partnered up with the Urbana High School Athletic Department to host the annual Community Night at the home football game between the Hillclimbers and the Jonathan Alder Pioneers. In past years, community members were asked to show up in their best maroon and white attire for free admission, but this year there was a twist. In an effort to bring a bigger community feel, the UHS Athletic Department asked the UHS DECA Chapter for some assistance in coordinating a non-perishable food drive for the Caring Kitchen. Heading this effort for the DECA Chapter was Senior member Gavin Spence and Junior member Paige Martinez. Spence and Martinez spent the week before and of advertising on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, took flyers around town, spread the word at the high school, involved the UJHS with a House Competition, sent flyers home with elementary students, and ran an ad on the Champaign Economic Partnership TV’s. By using a variety of advertisement strategies, the duo was able to get enough donations at the game to fill a truck bed. “It was amazing to see how the community responded to our efforts,” said Spence in reflecting to the outcome of community night. Martinez added, “We learned a lot from this experience, and can’t wait to make our next community night in December even better.” Spence and Martinez are currently planning their next community night event for the basketball season to continue their project. This project, called Community Giving, uses the project management process to raise awareness for a community issue or cause. The team will take their project and present at the Ohio DECA Career Development Conference in March in hopes to qualify for DECA International Career Development Conference in April at Nashville, Tennessee. Staff Writers of Springfield News-Sun Photo by Bill Lackey / STAFF Community partners involved in the project to redevelop the Douglas Hotel in Urbana say they are starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. After about five years of work behind-the-scenes, Champaign County economic officials said that the developers have applied for a pivotal grant that would push the funding for the project across the finish line. “(The developer) has indicated to us if they’re able to secure that grant, then they can move forward toward a closing to this project,” said Doug Crabill, Urbana’s community development manager. Crabill, as well as Marcia Bailey, director of Champaign County Economic Development, have been working with Flaherty & Collins Properties, a developer based in Indianapolis that has expressed interest in the project, to secure the funding for “Legacy Place.” The project would convert the Douglas Hotel, as well as the former North and South Elementary Schools in Urbana, into affordable senior apartments. Staff Writer at Springfield News-Sun After 36 years of serving ice cream to the Urbana community, the Dairy Corner has a new set of owners. Ken and Teri Jarboe, owners of Sparky’s Pizzeria, 644 Scioto St. in Urbana, showed interest in the Dairy Corner after they recognized previous owners, Bob and Robin Turner, looked “worn out.” Ken told Bob that if they ever wanted to sell the shop, they should sit down and talk. Robin explained that the night before, she and her husband came to the conclusion that “it was time to sell.” That was about a year ago. “Something had to change because we couldn’t physically or mentally work open to close, 7 days a week, 6-9 months a year,” Bob said. The Turners, announced the change of ownership on Aug. 23 via Facebook. On Sept. 2, the Dairy Corner began moving equipment to Sparky’s to have an “express menu” featuring their most popular items. The “express menu” is available the rest of the year offering chicken sandwiches, hot dogs, hamburgers, shakes/malts, sundaes, flurries, banana splits, vanilla soft serve and gourmet frozen treats. After a week of operating the “express menu,” shakes are still the No. 1 item sold at the Dairy Corner. “People are very excited that they’re going to be able to get their (Dairy Corner’s) wonderful products for the entire winter,” Click here to read the full article on Springfield News-Sun.
