The West Liberty-Salem Athletic Hall of Fame Committee is proud to announce its 2025 Class of Inductees. This year’s class honors the accomplishments of two historic cross-country teams as well as two individuals who left a lasting impact on Tiger athletics and the WL-S community: Coach Ann Thornburg and Contributor John Roettger.
By winning state titles in 1976, 1977, 1978, and 1979, these teams exemplified grit, determination, and teamwork—achieving milestones that elevated WL-S cross country to statewide recognition. Their induction honors not only the championships and accolades they earned, including the school’s third and fourth consecutive state titles, but also the culture of hard work and perseverance they instilled in future generations of runners.
Her influence, however, extended far beyond the sidelines. Thornburg was a true mentor and leader in all areas of student life. She played an instrumental role in Link Crew, guiding upperclassmen as they welcomed and mentored younger students. She served as a Student Council advisor, organized and led the Leadership Academy, and was the creative energy behind countless Track & Field Days that became school traditions. She even shared her love for adventure as a leader in the Ski Club. Through all these roles, Thornburg impacted students not only athletically, but also socially and personally. She instilled values of discipline, teamwork, and confidence while creating opportunities for students to discover their strengths. Her legacy is one of growth, inspiration, and community — a true cornerstone of Tiger Nation.
His involvement wasn’t limited to administration—Roettger also spent time on the sidelines, serving as Freshman Girls Basketball Coach from 2000–2002. He was deeply committed to students, both academically and athletically, and worked to ensure that Tiger athletics thrived as part of a well-rounded school experience.
Roettger’s induction reflects not only his contributions to athletics, but also his broader dedication to education, leadership, and community service. Induction Events The 2025 Hall of Fame Class will be formally honored on Friday, October 10th during halftime of the home varsity football game against Triad. The celebration will continue with a formal Induction Ceremony and Banquet on Saturday, October 11th at the Mac-O-Chee Castle Wedding & Event Venue in West Liberty. Details about banquet tickets and reservations will be announced soon. Honoring a Lasting Legacy This year’s Hall of Fame class exemplifies what it means to be a Tiger: dedication, perseverance, leadership, and service to the community. From the championship success of the 1978 and 1979 men's cross country teams, to the decades-long commitment of Coach Ann Thornburg, to the leadership and vision of John Roettger, each inductee has played a vital role in shaping the history and future of WL-S athletics. 📌 Do you know someone deserving of Hall of Fame recognition?
