Mercy Health Celebrates National Rural Health Day

Mercy Health Celebrates National Rural Health Day
Mercy Health is proud to join communities across America today in celebration of National Rural Health Day (NRHD), November 21, 2024.

The National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health and rural-focused organizations throughout the United States set aside the third Thursday of November to celebrate the “Power of Rural” and honor individuals and organizations dedicated to addressing the unique healthcare needs of nearly 61 million people living in rural America.
"It is of vital importance that we ensure our rural residents have the opportunity to be healthy and have access to affordable, quality health care regardless of where they call home," said Jamie Houseman, president of Mercy Health – Urbana Hospital. “We’re proud to recognize the incredible work of health professionals and volunteers in our community on National Rural Health Day and throughout the year.”

Since 1951, Mercy Health – Urbana Hospital has delivered quality, comprehensive, compassionate care. With a broad range of inpatient and outpatient services, skilled staff and state-of-the-art equipment, the hospital provides for much of local residents’ medical and surgical needs.

The hospital has been repeatedly recognized for its efforts to deliver exceptional patient care, earning a 5-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for the fourth year in a row for Overall Hospital Quality, a recognition which evaluates safety, quality, and patient experience. It also received the American Heart Association’s Get with the Guidelines® – Stroke Rural Recognition Bronze award for efforts to optimize stroke care and eliminate rural health care outcome disparities.

“As a hospital in a rural community, we managed unique characteristics such as extended interfacility transportation times or limited resources. We've made it a goal to make sure those hurdles do not affect the standard of care our patients receive,” said Houseman.

Since 2019, Mercy Health has been bridging the care gap with its Community Paramedicine Program. Since it began, the program has helped nearly 500 patients with everything from answering medical questions and providing basic care to connecting patients with meal support or other assistance.

Mercy Health – Urbana Hospital has also earned accolades for its commitment to sustainable practices that help protect the environment, the health of patients, and the community. Practice Greenhealth, a leading sustainability member organization for hospital networks, recognized the hospital with a Partner for Change Award, which spotlights hospitals for superior performance in sustainability through a range of different programs and activities that include reducing waste and maximizing energy savings. The hospital is also a repeat recipient of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ENERGY STAR® certification, which noted the Urbana facility is more energy efficient than 86% of similar properties nationwide.
