How Urbana got its name

A look at downtown Urbana

What year was Urbana Established? Let’s go back to the beginning shall we. Urbana was established in 1805 as the county seat of Champaign County. Urbana was founded by William Ward and Joseph C Vance on October 11, 1805. No one knows for sure where the name came from, however the Latin word 'urbs' means city.  From the start, Urbana was a manufacturing town boasting of three broom factories by 1886. 

Unlike many cities, Urbana’s rich history makes it a unique city to visit. Whether it be taking a walking tour to see the beautiful homes on Scioto Street, or visiting the grave site of Simon Kenton, Urbana is a treasure trove for history buffs. Many of the buildings and businesses you see downtown today are original. Not many cities can say that anymore.
