​In an effort to make back to school more affordable for all families, Mechanicsburg Schools announced financial shifts for the upcoming 2026–2027 school year. By reallocating local tax dollars, the district is enhancing the instructional experience while directly easing the financial burden on local households. For the 2026–2027 school year, families will benefit from two key decisions. No new school fees will be assessed for the 2026–2027 school year for elementary and middle school students. While families remain responsible for any outstanding balances from previous years, no additional fees will be added. HS students will pay a reduced flat fee of $50.

Shoppers looking for bargains will have the opportunity to browse a wide selection of surplus items during Mercy Health Urbana Hospital's Indoor Yard Sale on Wednesday, Aug. 26, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The sale will take place inside the hospital at 904 Scioto St. Visitors should enter through the Outpatient Registration entrance, located near the flagpole at the rear of the hospital.

As the new school year approaches, Ohio Hi-Point Career Center will welcome new and returning students and their families to Student Orientation on Wednesday, Aug. 12, from 12-5 p.m. The event will provide students with the information and resources they need to begin the school year.

Breast Friends Forever of Champaign County is inviting the community to take part in its annual Breast Cancer Awareness Event on Saturday, Aug. 22, featuring a charity poker run and convenient on-site mammography screenings.

Mercy Health – Springfield Cancer Center is inviting cancer survivors, caregivers and community members to its annual Ice Cream Social on Saturday, August 8th from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Springfield Cancer Center (148 West North Street, Springfield).

From July 21 through August 2, Sunshine Book Nook, located at 111 N. Main St., will take part in the Small Town Indie Bookshop Hop, a regional event celebrating independent bookstores throughout west-central Ohio. The hop encourages readers to visit participating shops, discover new books, support local businesses, and explore the unique character each bookstore has to offer.

Other participating bookstores are located in Yellow Springs, Tipp City, Troy, Piqua, and Bellefontaine, giving readers an opportunity to turn the event into a literary road trip while supporting locally owned businesses.
