Descendant to Share Story of Addison White’s Flight to Freedom in Mechanicsburg Free Program July 27 at Historical Society

The often-shared story of Addison White, who escaped enslavement in Kentucky and found refuge and freedom in Mechanicsburg, despite the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, will be told from a new perspective at 2 p.m. July 27 at the Champaign County Historical Society Museum.

John Booth, White’s great-great grandson, will share his famous ancestor’s story, passed down through the generations, and through his original poetry. Booth’s presentation is free and open to the public. In June, Booth, a blues musician, performed at the CCHS Picnic and Concert on the Lawn.

Chamber Night at the Races Celebrates 32 Years of Fair Week Tradition—Now on Monday Night!

A cornerstone of Champaign County Fair week is back for its 32nd year: Chamber Night at the Races, hosted by the Champaign County Chamber of Commerce. This signature event will take place on a new night—Monday, August 4, 2025, marking a shift from its traditional Tuesday slot while continuing to deliver all the excitement, giveaways, and community spirit fairgoers know and love.

Since its inception over three decades ago, Chamber Night at the Races has grown into the busiest night of horse racing at the fair, featuring live harness racing, a packed grandstand, and a night-long series of prize raffles generously sponsored by local Chamber members.

What started with television giveaways has evolved into a tech-lovers’ dream: recent years have featured prizes such as Ring doorbells, iPads, Kindles, Apple Watches, and more. Each prize sponsor is acknowledged during the event with a live narrative read over the grandstand speaker system and featured in a live broadcast by the Ohio Harness Horsemen’s Association, giving businesses a powerful spotlight before a captive audience.

Rock the Lake 2025 Returns to Indian Lake with Music, Ministry, and Family Fun

One of the region’s most anticipated summer traditions is back. Rock the Lake 2025 will take place Saturday, August 2, at Old Field Beach at Indian Lake State Park. Presented by RV Wholesalers and River Radio Ministries, the event promises an uplifting evening of music, ministry, and family-friendly fun.

Now in its 11th year, Rock the Lake continues to draw crowds from across Ohio for its blend of nationally recognized Christian music, local outreach, and lakeside atmosphere. This year’s concert lineup features We The Kingdom, Rend Collective, and Blessing Offor. General admission is free, with upgrade options available for reserved seating, meet-and-greet access, and parking. Attendees are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket for lawn seating.
