Position Overview
​The City of Urbana is seeking a qualified Sewer Maintenance Supervisor to lead its Sewer Maintenance Division. This position is responsible for planning, directing, and overseeing all sewer operations, including repair, maintenance, drainage, inspections, and support of other Public Works divisions.
​
The ideal candidate will bring a mix of technical expertise and supervisory experience, with a strong commitment to safety, efficiency, and public service.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan, schedule, and manage sewer system construction, repair, and maintenance activities.
  
• Oversee sewer line cleaning, televising, and inspections to maintain system performance.
  
• Supervise crews in the repair of lift stations, sewer lines, and related infrastructure.
  
• Manage materials, supplies, and equipment for daily and emergency operations.
  
• Respond to sewer backups and emergencies, determining responsibility and coordinating response.
  
• Ensure compliance with City standards, OUPS (811 dig alerts), and state regulations.
  
• Assist with cost estimates, budgets, and consultant contracts.
  
• Maintain records of equipment usage, system performance, and repair activities.
  

Minimum Qualifications

• Education: Associate’s Degree in General Engineering, Computer Science, Electronics, or a related field (High School Diploma or GED required at minimum).
  
• Experience: At least 5 years in public utilities with progressive technical and supervisory duties.
  
• Licenses/Certifications:
  
  • Valid Ohio Driver’s License and Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
    
  • Ohio EPA Class I Wastewater Operator Certificate or Class I Sewer Collection license (must be obtained within 12 months of employment).
    
  • Ohio Pesticide Applicator’s License (must be obtained within 24 months).
    

Skills & Abilities

• Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills.
  
• Knowledge of sewer system operations, repair methods, and safe work practices.
  
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and web-based systems.
  
• Ability to supervise, train, and work alongside staff.
  
• Physically able to perform duties, including lifting up to 80 lbs. and working in varied environmental conditions.
