Legal Assistant/Victim Advocate – City of Urbana

Position Overview:
​The City of Urbana is now accepting applications for a Legal Assistant/Victim Advocate to support the Law Director and Prosecutor’s Office. This vital role combines clerical, administrative, and advocacy responsibilities, supporting attorneys and assisting crime victims as they navigate the judicial process. The position is partially grant-funded and reports directly to the Law Director.

Key Responsibilities:

• Prepare legal documents, case files, and manage evidence for court proceedings.
• Assist victims of crime, ensuring they understand their rights and receive support through court processes.
• Maintain case notes, confidential records, and organize filing systems.
• Respond to inquiries from law enforcement, court personnel, attorneys, and the public.
• Communicate victim concerns to the Court (e.g., protection orders, damages).
• Accompany victims to court and provide community resource referrals.
• Maintain accurate records of victim services and resources.

Required Skills:

• Sensitivity and professionalism in working with victims of crime.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong multitasking, organization, and confidentiality practices.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and standard office equipment.
• Ability to remain composed in high-stress situations.
• Willingness to attend training and workshops, including Attorney General’s victim advocacy training.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED required; office-related coursework preferred.
• Minimum 2 years of experience in a related field (victim advocacy or paralegal experience strongly preferred).
• Must complete Ohio Attorney General's Office victim advocacy training upon hire.
• Valid driver's license or the ability to obtain one.

Work Environment:

• Primarily office-based, quiet setting.
• Occasional lifting (up to 25 lbs) and walking may be required.
• May require local travel for court support or document delivery.
