​The City of Urbana is actively seeking candidates for the Fire Marshal position.

Position Overview
The City of Urbana is accepting applications for a Firefighter in Prevention. This role focuses on day-to-day fire prevention, enforcing fire codes, coordinating inspections, and promoting community safety. The position works closely with other City departments to ensure compliance and the health and welfare of residents.

This is a professional and community-facing position that requires strong communication skills, technical expertise, and a customer-friendly approach.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct inspections for fire code compliance (new construction, remodeling, existing properties).
• Review occupancy permits and fire suppression systems.
• Investigate fires and manage fire code complaints and violations.
• Collaborate with City Engineer’s Office, Building Department, and Police Division.
• Provide public fire prevention education.
• Maintain accurate records in accordance with Ohio Sunshine Law.
• Assist in developing fire prevention policies and procedures.
• Serve on committees, attend training, and assist with new employee training.

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED
• State of Ohio Certified Level II Firefighter
• State of Ohio Certified EMT (or higher)
• State of Ohio Certified Fire Safety Inspector
• Two (2) years of increasingly responsible related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
• Valid driver’s license and safe driving record

Additional Skills & Abilities

• Strong communication (verbal, written, electronic)
• Ability to interpret and enforce City and State fire codes
• Professional, customer-focused approach with community members
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn web-based fire code software

Working Conditions

• Both office and outdoor work required
• Occasional exposure to heights, weather conditions, chemicals, or fumes
• May lift/move up to 25 lbs
• Moderate noise environment
